I posted a few days ago about my first foray into PC gaming, and I got some tips from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! regarding GTA V ’s graphics. I’ve implemented them, and I like what I’ve seen so far.

First off, I opened GeForce Experience and realized it was scanning my HDD for games instead of my SSD, so I fixed that LOL. I then had GTA V optimized for a 2715x1527 resolution through Nvidia’s DSR; I also set the Power Management to Maximum Performance and Threaded Optimization to full-On.

At first, I was impressed - the lighting and detail looked really good. I got pretty frustrated after that, however, as Vsync was limiting the framerate to 30 FPS in most situations; the framerate also dipped to 15-30 FPS during certain cutscenes (i.e. indoor ones). I checked through the settings and saw that Long Shadows and High Resolution Shadows were switched on as part of the GeForce optimization, and my 970’s VRAM use had been bumped up to ~3.4 GB as a result. I switched those off to bring VRAM use back down to ~3.0 GB; after I turned Vsync off, I was able to get a framerate between 40-60 FPS most of the time; it now dips to 30-35 FPS at worst, which is still better than what I was getting just after the automatic optimization.

2715x1527 resolution? Is that what your monitor is?

No, my monitor is 1080p - from my (limited) understanding, Dynamic Super Resolution is supposed to be a substitute for anti-aliasing; it has the game run at a higher resolution and then uses that level of detail to smooth out the jagged edges and such on the 1080p resolution that’s actually displayed on the monitor.

That’s supposed to be the modified Dinka Jester that you can find while out-and-about; IDK what happened there, LOL.

Do you notice much of a difference? You’d get higher frame rates if you turn it off.

I felt that the lighting improved a lot, and the level of detail certainly seems to be just as good (if not better) while the framerates I’ve been getting seem better overall. I admittedly don’t have much experience with experimenting with the AA and resolution, and I know that I’d get higher framerates with DSR off - I probably will tinker with the settings some more when I get a chance.

I’ll add that if you’d still like to tweak settings a bit, check out Nvidia’s Grand Theft Auto V PC Graphics & Performance Guide . It’s very thorough, yet easy to use. You can compare each setting side-by-side and see what effects it has. They have guides for a few different AAA games, I also used their guide for The Witcher 3.

Yeah, I referenced that guide quite a bit when I was setting stuff up on my own.

Yeah, I’ve been online the past couple of nights. IDK if I’ll be able to make it tonight, but I’ll definitely be on tomorrow night.

I find this interesting. I finally built myself a desktop a couple months ago and have been debating getting GTA. Not sure how well I can handle it running a Radeon R9 280X. Might give it ago if I ever see it on sale on Steam.

IDK if you’ll see it on sale on Steam anytime soon; I think the best deal yet was when they bundled Shark Cards with the game during the Steam Summer Sale and then cut the price to the same $60 as the game alone.

If you put certain settings on Normal, High or Very High, I think you could manage just fine with 3 GB of VRAM - I can dial back the distance scaling effects from the levels they were set to as part of the GeForce optimization, but I already have enough headroom to dial the Grass Quality up to Ultra from Very High.
